Follow-Ups

Does Gmail Have Automatic Follow-Up?

No. Gmail can remind you, schedule a send and snooze an email, but it can't send a follow-up for you. Here's what it does and how to add the rest.

No, Gmail can’t follow up for you. It can remind you that someone didn’t reply (Gmail calls these “nudges”), send an email at a time you pick, and hide an email until later. But it won’t send a second email when someone goes quiet, and it won’t stop when they answer. To get that inside Gmail, you add a tool that does it. Mixmax is one: write the email once, and if they don’t reply, Mixmax sends the follow-up you wrote and stops the moment they reply.

Here’s what Gmail does on its own, where it stops, and how to set up the rest.

What Gmail does on its own

Gmail has three features people use to keep track of follow-ups. All three are useful, and none of them sends anything for you.

1. Nudges. Gmail can bring an email you sent back to the top of your inbox when it thinks you might need to follow up. You turn this on in Settings → See all settings → General → Nudges, then tick “Suggest emails to follow up on.” Gmail decides which emails to bring back, and Google’s help pages don’t say how it picks them or after how long. (Gmail Help: Reply to messages)

2. Schedule send. You can write an email now and have Gmail send it later. Click the arrow next to Send and choose Schedule send. Google says you can have up to 100 scheduled emails at once. (Gmail Help: Schedule emails to send)

3. Snooze. You can hide an email from your inbox until a day and time you choose. When the time comes, it comes back to the top. (Gmail Help: Snooze emails until later)

What Gmail can’t do

Put those three together and you still have a gap.

  • A scheduled follow-up sends even if they already replied. Schedule send doesn’t know about replies. If they answer on Tuesday, your Thursday “just checking in” still goes out, unless you remember to cancel it.
  • A nudge only reminds you. You still have to open the thread, write the follow-up and send it. If you’re busy that day, it slips.
  • Snooze is a reminder too. It brings the email back. It doesn’t write or send anything.
  • None of it works across many people. If you pitched 20 people this week, you’re tracking 20 threads by hand.

So the question most people are really asking is: “How do I get Gmail to send my follow-up when someone doesn’t reply, and not send it when they do?” That’s the part you need to add.

How to add automatic follow-up to Gmail

Here’s how it works in Mixmax, a lightweight outreach tool inside Gmail. The steps are the same whether you’re following up with one person or forty.

For one email: get reminded if they don’t reply

  1. Sign up for Mixmax with your Google account. It’s free to start, with no credit card.
  2. Write your email in Gmail as usual.
  3. In the Mixmax bar at the bottom of the compose window, add a reminder for if they don’t reply, and pick the day.
  4. Send. If they answer before then, nothing happens. If they don’t, Mixmax reminds you.

This is the right fit when every follow-up needs a personal touch, like a client you know well.

For emails you send often: let the follow-up send itself

  1. Write the first email and the follow-ups once, as a sequence. Choose how many days to wait before each follow-up.
  2. Add people. Type them in, or bring them in from a CSV, Salesforce or HubSpot. You can also add someone straight from your reply to them.
  3. Start it. Each follow-up goes out as a reply in the same thread, from your own Gmail address, so it reads like you wrote it that morning.
  4. When someone replies, their follow-ups stop. They never get the awkward “just checking in” after they already answered.

This fits people who send the same kind of email again and again: founders pitching investors, recruiters reaching out to candidates, agents answering new enquiries, consultants checking in with past clients.

Which option is best for you?

What you needBest forWhat you give up
Gmail on its own (nudges, schedule send, snooze)A few follow-ups a week that you’re happy to write by handNothing sends for you, and scheduled sends don’t stop on a reply
A reminder toolFollow-ups that each need a personal noteYou still write and send each one
A follow-up tool like MixmaxAnyone sending the same kind of email to many people who wants follow-ups to send and stop on their ownYou write the follow-ups once, up front
A mail merge add-onOne email to a big list from a spreadsheetIt’s built around the list, not the conversation. More in mail merge vs. a follow-up tool

Frequently asked questions

Does Gmail have an auto follow-up feature?

No. Gmail can remind you with nudges, schedule a send and snooze an email. It can’t send a follow-up for you when someone doesn’t reply.

Can Gmail remind me if someone doesn’t reply?

Sometimes. With nudges turned on, Gmail may bring a sent email back to the top of your inbox. Gmail picks which emails and when. If you want to choose the day yourself, use a reminder from a tool like Mixmax.

Will a scheduled follow-up still send if they reply?

Yes. Gmail’s schedule send doesn’t check for replies. You have to cancel it yourself from the Scheduled folder. A follow-up tool stops on its own when they reply.

How do I stop follow-ups when someone replies in Gmail?

Use a tool that watches the thread. In Mixmax, any follow-up in a sequence stops the moment that person replies.

Is there a free way to send automatic follow-ups in Gmail?

Mixmax Free costs $0 and covers 50 sequence recipients and 20 tracked emails a month, which is enough to try automatic follow-ups on a real week of email.

How long should I wait before the follow-up?

It depends on who they are and who emailed first. Our guide on how long to wait before following up gives a default for each situation.

The next step

Pick the next email you’d hate to see go quiet. Write the follow-up now, set the day, and let it send if they don’t answer. Start free with your Google account.
