Mixmax vs. FollowUpThen: a reminder, or the follow-up itself
FollowUpThen is an email reminder: put a date before the @ sign and the email comes back to you then. Mixmax is a lightweight outreach tool inside Gmail: write your follow-ups once, and if they don't reply, Mixmax sends them from your Gmail and stops the moment they do.
- It reminds you. It doesn't send the follow-up you wrote from your own Gmail.
- Cancelling a reminder when they reply needs the paid Response Detection add-on.
- The free plan covers 50 active reminders a month.
- Extra features are sold as add-ons, from $2 to $20 a month each.
- Write your follow-ups once. If they don't reply, Mixmax sends them from your Gmail, in the same thread.
- Follow-ups stop the moment they reply, on every plan.
- "Remind me if no reply" brings the email back to the top of your inbox when someone goes quiet.
- See who opened your email and clicked your links.
- Booking links so people can pick a time without the back-and-forth.
- Free plan: 50 sequence recipients and 20 tracked emails a month.
What can you do with Mixmax vs. FollowUpThen?
-
How does FollowUpThen work?
You add an address with a time in it, like 3days@followupthen.com, to the bcc or cc line of an email. When that time comes, FollowUpThen sends the email back to you. In cc, it can remind everyone on the email. There's nothing to install, and it works from any email app on any device.
With the Response Detection add-on, it can cancel the reminder if you get a reply.

What does FollowUpThen do well?
It's the simplest follow-up reminder there is. Nothing to install, no inbox connection required, and it understands thousands of ways of writing a date. It's private and cheap: free for 50 active reminders a month, then $4 a month billed yearly. Add-ons cover recurring reminders, SMS alerts, Google Calendar and Zapier.
If you mostly need a nudge to remember, it does that well.

What's the difference between a reminder and an automatic follow-up?
A reminder tells you to follow up, and you still write and send the email. An automatic follow-up is written in advance and sent for you if the person hasn't replied.
Mixmax does both. Use "Remind me if no reply" when you want to decide in the moment, or write the follow-up once and let Mixmax send it from your Gmail if they go quiet.
-
Is Mixmax more expensive than FollowUpThen?
Yes, on paid plans. FollowUpThen's base plan is $4 a month billed yearly ($5 monthly), plus any add-ons. Mixmax starts at $29 per user a month billed yearly ($34 monthly). Both have a free plan, and Mixmax's free plan includes follow-ups that send themselves and stop on reply.
-
Should I choose FollowUpThen or Mixmax?
Choose FollowUpThen if you want a reminder that works from any email app with nothing to install, and you're happy to write each follow-up yourself.
Choose Mixmax if you want the follow-up itself sent for you, from your Gmail, in the same thread, and stopped when they reply. Our guides on how to follow up after no response and on automated email follow-up tools cover both approaches.
